Think a Little Outside the Norm When People Pass Away
July 16, 2020
If the person who passed meant a lot to you, or to someone you know well, consider doing something special a few weeks later. There is often an outpouring of love and attention in the days after a loved one dies. But as too many of us know, the loneliness is worse as the weeks progress.
Here are a few ideas:
- Send a letter with special memories of the person who passed.
- Arrange a visit when it is safe, or video call with loved ones . . . share stories and listen to their stories.
- Frame a special photo of their loved one.
- Prepare meals in containers that don’t need to be returned; include instructions for cooking, reheating, or freezing.
- Deliver a giant stuffed bear holding a bottle of wine.
- Arrange an experience that you can do together in the future, and share the simple pleasures of life and friendship: ride bikes, walk on the beach, or walk through a park.
- Deliver a tabletop Christmas tree pre-lit and decorated with “photo ornaments” of the person who passed with family and friends.
- And if it is welcomed . . . bring a puppy to love with all the necessities (crate, food, toys, food/water dish, etc.) . . . but by all means, ask first!
